About Steve Carter

Born from the trenches of news videography and documentary, I look for beauty in truth with my head on the ground and my eyes in the air for the birds-eye view.

I grew up in a small Ohio Mill town, sandwiched between the foothills of the Scioto Valley and the banks of the Ohio River. I would roam the hillsides, the river banks and abandoned steel mills with a sense of wonder and imagination that would carry over into my adult life as a cinematographer.

I have worked in many aspects of film or TV for 25 years. After my education at Wright State University Film School, my career path roots would plant in news videography in 1995. I then grew into stage managing and lighting for The Media Group, a production company and stage in Columbus, Ohio. Finally in 2000, I would branch into narrative filmmaking when I moved to Chicago to shoot my first feature film, Dead Letters. From there, I have bounced between documentary, corporate, narrative, and commercial work in the City of Los Angeles where I now reside. My most recent position was the in-house cinematographer and photographer for the start-up tech company, True Car.

I’ve worn nearly every hat in production. This versatile background gives me the relevant tools to collaborate with all departments as well as the skillset to operate as a one-man-band, taking projects from development to completion as a one person production unit.

Whether you are looking to fill the role for a cinematographer on your next production, or looking for someone that you can drop into the battlefield armed only with a camera and microphone, I am a great fit. My super power is collaboration. I will selflessly do what is right for your project.
